Gambit – Interview

His new album is out on the 10th of october, we’ve done an interview with him…

Underground United: Hello Gambit, please introduce yourself to those who have never heard of you before.

Gambit: Yes, i’m Gambit, mc, producer and co-founder of Revolt Records switzerland and ex-vocalist of Last Resort.

Underground United: For how long are you doing music?

Gambit: I started rappin’ in the mid 90’s and producing came around 1999.

Underground United: Last resort did quite a big impact in the hardcore-hiphop scene a few years ago. How came you split?

Gambit: Well, that’s a long story, i think it happened mainly because we developed differently, personally and musically, so we thought it’s better to split.. He’s doing his thing and i do mine, simple as that, but nevertheless, it’s all cool.. He was behind the boards when i was recording the tracks for another planet, the man is a skilled engineer you know!

Underground United: What has happend since then?

Gambit: A lot man, we left our former label hardcore one, founded revolt records in 2003, did some dnb gigs, produced many dubplates, held our eyes open for new acts that we can work with etc..and after a while, when the structure of revolt was settled, i started working on the album..

Underground United: Who took care of all the productionwork on your album? Was it all done by yourself?

Gambit: Yeah almost, only the first tune on the album, “the redeemer” is co-produced by Taste, the rest is all me..i’m my own producer and it’s cool like that, i mean, i know best what beats i need..

Underground United: What equipment do you use?

Gambit: Not much, just an old i-mac, a old version of reason and cubase, that’s it..damn i need a new computer haha

Underground United: Whats your favourite beer? And what the hell has that to do with music?

Gambit: Hmmm…my favorite at the moment is the finnish “lapin kulta”..so if someone from finnland is reading this, kippis! ..Hey music has at least one thing in common with beer..we need both daily..lol

Underground United : The two Last Resort releases and the track on the compilation album, hardcore solution part 2 came in that typical hardcore-hiphop sound, often classified as britcore. The new album sounds more experimental, often ragga influenced. Compared to the britcore sounding releases before its more stuff one can dance to, its more positive sounding, more party. What made you change your style, especially the production?

Gambit: Good question! It’s been a while since the last resort releases and in the meantime i just tried to expand my repertoire..back in the day, everything had to be sinister and grimey but if you ride always on the same type of beats your flow might stagnate u know..

I love the hard shit but i’m also a friend of progress, i’m always working on beats that upgrade my skills, sometimes it’s just an atypical drumpattern that puts you on a different tip and that’s what i’m looking for, new refreshing stuff that entertains the listener as well as myself..yeah you’re right another planet sounds much more dancy and more positive than the old last resort material but basically i just wanted to create an versatile album that shows what i’m able to. There’s a bright range of styles on the album but it’s not all party, „ghetto kasatchok“ for example is a political tune that goes against those who surpress and discriminate so called “ghetto people” just because of their background, no matter if they did something or not..and if you listen to „the phantom and the cobra“ you’ll hear some of my hardest verses ever..i think all in all is another planet something for everybody.

Underground United: Your rappin is very breathtaking, the tonguetwists are fast, precise and very advanced. How often do you practise?

Gambit: Thanks man…i practise almost daily, to me its a everyday thing like coffee.

Underground United: Some say that beer is source and solution of all problems. Is it true?

Gambit: I always thought it’s wodka, but it’s beer yeah..since i’m drinkin beer i don’t have problems anymore..isn’t that fantastic?

Underground United: You’ve worked with Bandog, Remark and Alkaline. What other artists you would like to work with?

Gambit: Hm..yeah, I’d love to do a track with Son Doobie, he’s one of my favorite mc’s.

Underground United: What other projects you’re working on?

Gambit: I’m working with my man dondon aka mc Alkaline on his comeback tunes (fans & supporters, your patience will be rewarded), i’m producing beats for “Feuerring”, they’re revolts german rapping act..then i produce for Emmy Gee, a young rapper from south africa and for Bigstax, an up and coming mc from london..This is the revolt line up btw.!

Underground United: What kind of music you listen to when youre at home, which genre you prefer when going out?

Gambit:  At Home?..a lot of rap, it goes from kool g. rap to styles of beyond, mc ren to blood of abraham, the list is long man.. I’m also very much into traditional east-european and balkan music. I’m from poland and i love all the traditional stuff from over there..hm..when i’m goin out? Whatever, some gipsy stuff, GOOD hip hop, electro, dnb..

Underground United: What was the last vinyl or cd you bought?

Gambit: Uhm..the new Stereo MC’s album “Doublebubble” on cd…

Underground United: Whats your plans for your future as an solo-artist?

Gambit: My album is out now which means anew chapter has begun so i’ll do everything necessary to push things forward you know. i’m ready to elevate the whole revolt thing and I wanna reach old and new fans with it.

Underground United: Heres some space for anything mor you want to say, greets, loveletters and anything else:

Gambit: Lol, ok…I would like to say thanks to all the supporters that waited for my album, i appreciate that..i hope you feel “another planet” as much is a do! also, i would like to greet david @ revolt, dondon and the whole revolt crew..and last but not least a shout to hamburg..!

Many thanks for the interview and all the best in life, personally and musically! Peace!
